Open Day success
Palacerigg
Golf Club is on the verge of huge changes to its junior membership
after 39 local children swamped its Come and Try day this
month.
Earlier this
year the Club signed up to the national junior golf development
programme, clubgolf, to make the game accessible to local
children and reverse the decline of its junior membership. At
the time it had just seven juniors.
Two of its members
trained to become volunteer coached after attending the PGA
Level 1 course and plan to run a junior coaching programme
for local children this summer, starting in May. To
generate interest in the coaching, the club opened its doors
to local children last weekend.
“We were
delighted with the response, we had a lot of positive feedback
from the parents and kids alike and two signed up on the
day,” said the Club’s junior convenor and volunteer
coach, Frank Anderson.
“We have
also recruited a further three members who are keen to go
on the PGA Level 1 course and become coaches. With the continued
support of North Lanarkshire Golf Development Group, North
Lanarkshire Leisure Golf and clubgolf the future of junior
golf at Palacerigg is looking healthy.”
Local children
who missed last weekend’s open day will have another
opportunity when the Club hosts a sign up day this Sunday
(20 April).
“We hope
that many will return to join and receive the planned two
year coaching programme which will be starting in May,” added
Mr Anderson.
Emerging out
of Scotland’s successful bid to host the Ryder Cup,
clubgolf is a partnership between the Scottish Golf Union,
the Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association, the Professional
Golfers' Association, the Golf Foundation and sportscotland. The
programme has been developed as a direct result of the Scottish
Government’s commitment to introduce every nine-year-old
child in Scotland to golf.
